Ikebe Shakedown – “Tujunga” by Ubiquity Records

Over a period of three days last week, I heard at least three different WMBR DJ’s playing a nasty new set of uptempo horn jams. The album they were spinning is new self-titled LP from Brooklyn’s Ikebe Shakedown, released June 8th on Ubiquity Records. I listened to the albums first track Tujunga, had my mind sufficiently blown and then immediately purchased the LP from the Ubiquity website. You can listen to Tujunga above and hopefully have a similar experience. The whole album is just packed with awesome afrobeat instrumental tracks. From the record label, because they describe this stuff way better than I ever could:

Ikebe Shakedown, the self-titled album from the Brooklyn-based band, plays with elements of Cinematic Soul, Afro-funk, Deep Disco, and Boogaloo in all the right ways. After spending a few years together the group, named after a favorite Nigerian boogie record (and pronounced “ee-KAY-bay,”) delivers a driving set of tunes featuring a mighty horn section anchored by tight, deep-pocketed grooves.

Below, you can listen to their 2009 EP, Hard Steppin’. I recommend the tracks Hard Steppin’ and Afro Fred. I can only imagine how great they sound live. Listen to their music here, and if you’re feeling the grooves, be sure to check out their Ubiquity labelmates Nomo and Orgone as well.
