Prior to last Saturday’s Queens of the Stone Age show, few among us had ever witnessed a headline set start before 9:30pm, let alone finish by then. Fortunately (or not) there’s a first time for everything. Read on for some pics and thoughts from the earliest concert in rock ‘n’ roll history.

Playing an album front-to-back is somewhat in vogue these days. Weezer are back touring with albums made before they went completely off the rails, Suede are back in action playing decent albums front-to-back, and of course Roger Waters is blowing minds all over the place playing both “The Wall” and “Dark Side of the Moon.” The difference with those guys is that they’re playing albums widely considered to be their seminal works. QOTSA’s self-titled debut, in our humble opinion, is not their finest effort.

Nevertheless it was on some level entertaining to hear the band hark back to an album now 14 years removed from conception. The blitzed though all 11 tracks in record time, with a moments pause to remind us of the potential pitfalls of Mexican travel and the outrage of banning cigarettes indoors (thanks for the reminders, Josh).

Homme, clad in a pair of uber skinny jeans that may have appeared to the casual observer like leggings, was on point both with his guitar and vocals. The rest of the crew kept up their end of the bargain too. While they may have reached their creative peak a decade ago, they are all clearly still capable musicians.

The band proceeded through 2 encores, playing a commendable slate of their hits prior to the aforementioned 9:30pm bailout. We’re not sure why the set felt so short, but whether it was the early start, or the crowd just beginning to get serious, we were left wanting more.
