This song is one of my all time favorites, and it is probably the unofficial starting point of my ongoing journey to discover awesome older music. In the early 70′s, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye teamed up to create Diana & Marvin, a collection of 10 duets by two of the biggest names in the history of music. But don’t let that album cover mislead you; this song, along with the majority of the album, was recorded by the pair in two separate studios. Marvin, at the top of his game, insisted on roasting bones nonstop in the recording studio, and a pregnant Diana did not approve of his lifestyle choice. She complained to Berry Gordy, and the duo split up to record their vocal tracks by their lonesome. Regardless of this trivia, Diana’s voice on this track is as smooth as silk, and Marvin also sounds as great as he ever did. I’ve also included an
Alternate Mix which features slightly different vocal tracks from both parties, and a different mix from The Funk Brothers as well. Enjoy.
