Rob Eaton, creator and curator of the inimitable Poor Decisions Blog made at least one commendable decision last week, to go see Northern-Irish upstarts Two Door Cinema Club and French indie-dance Juggernauts Phoenix perform at Boston University’s Agganis Arena. Read on for his impressions on both acts as well as a slate of pics and video from the show.

Phoenix obviously killed it during this show, but before delving into a write up of their performance I want to highlight their (main) opening act, Two Door Cinema Club. They are a group that I’ve been excited to see anyway, let alone paired with Phoenix, neither of whom I’ve seen before. I got the feeling that this was not the case for many of the people in attendance however, as the majority on-hand didn’t seem like they knew the tunes. Despite the lack of any prior knowledge with regards to the Irish group’s musical portfolio, they quickly won over the crowd, rocking out and inserting digital effects à la local-darlings-gone-big Passion Pit. I have a feeling this band will take off soon, they are young and already have a great catalog of songs. Their live display engages the crowd in a way that many bands far their senior still cannot. The musical highlights for them were Undercover Martyn, Something Good Can Work and What You Know.

Now, Phoenix’s show, no surprise here, was absolutely epic. Second only to the Passion Pit show I saw a year or two back (before they took off) in terms of energy and crowd involvement. Simply put, they tore the place down. Their set featured all of their well-known songs off of Wolfgang Amadeus, plus a few classics mixed in. See the full setlist below.

For the first part of their encore, they surprised the crowd by popping up in the middle of floor on a stage toward the back, rocking an acoustic French set. After a while up there, the crowd surged to the front again, someone tipping them off that they’d be moving back there shortly. Sure enough, the band kicked in and lead singer Thomas Mars made his way through the crowd into the stands trailing a long red rope light. I was fortunate enough to be videoing this part of the show, and even more so that he came right by us and I actually had to get out of the way (and high five him) on the way by, so be sure to check that out below. If you any appreciation of live music and have the chance to make it to a Phoenix show, you need to take it.
