Rolling Stone magazine recently unleashed a special collector’s edition detailing what they consider to be the Beatles’ 100 finest tracks, in order. The magazine (on sale here) features the list of the fab four’s greatest songs, as well as quotes from the band on each track and an introduction by Elvis Costello. Looking over the list really drives home just how deep their catalog is, any band that can claim to have 59 songs better than “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” surely did something right. Can’t believe “get back” didn’t crack the top 40 that songs owns.
Still scanning the list for Rocky Raccoon…
Seriously. It’s a masterpiece.
Add:
This Boy
Rocky Raccoon
Michelle
Octopus’ Garden
I Me Mine
Honey Pie
Til There Was You
Consider:
I Will
Savoy Truffle
I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party
Anna (Go To Him)
Remove:
Back in the USSR
I agree with your add list however not with I don’t want to spoil the party in your consider list nor do I agree with Back in the USSR to remove haha. Back in the USSR was awesome, while I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party is the one in my beatles playlist that I skip…
Your Really Scraping The Bottom Of A Top 100 Beatles List With Honey Pie Or Anything From Please Please Me And With The Beatles.
I totally agree with Michelle being on the list
‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ at No.18?? The song that changed rock music for ever!!
I was kinda wondering why Dear Prudence was so low. If the listener has ears, there are so many songs that have ambiance of Dear Prudence in them…one of my favorite songs of all time.
I agree with you on Dear Prudence, I think it’s one of the great unsung songs. High on my play list and also one of my favorites of all time.
I totally agree. That song should be in the top 5.
helter skelter changed music forever and its number 52…
Helter Skelter Is Just A Mess That The Beatles Really Should Have Left Unreleased, I’d For Surely Have Taken Whats The New Mary Jane On The White Album Over It!
A top 100 list is kind of big. The beatles didn’t have more than 310 songs, so this list is a third of all their songs. It’s not really the “best 100″ it’s more like “the better half” but then again, every one of their songs PWN. Save for a certain white album song that has nothing to do with honey.
I didn’t expect to see it on this list but “You Like Me Too Much” has always been one of my personal faves.
Along with “The Night Before” and “Tell Me What You See” (both also from the “Help!” LP) it features electric piano and also has ascending and descending acoustic piano lines that interact with descending and ascending guitar phrases in a clever ‘call and response’ interplay as well as having a swinging groove that recalls (to me anyway) Georgie Fame’s massive hit “Yeh Yeh” (which displaced “I Feel Fine” from the UK #1 slot in early 1965)
That’s my 2¢ on that subject.
Agreements? Disagreements? Death threats?
2 more things…
No “Octopus’ Garden?”
and “Yellow Submarine” no higher than #74??
I agree with the Octopus’s Garden. Help! is one of my favourite albums and I like You Like Me Too Much and The Night Before
I agree!!! Octopus’s Garden was a classic, a fine moment for Ringo, and Help! is one of my faves too!
Yeah … top 100 songs, everyone’s going to have their opinions and everyone is right. Everyone can have their top 10 and I’d love any list. What I was hoping for was the recognition of an obscure song – Yes It Is. Hard to find, but very sweet. So it was song #99 that made the list for me. Hope you found your song on here as well.
The End
ranked 23 is abbey road medley, the abbey road medley is 8 different songs
It’s not even one of their proper songs from their albums
I’ll put the rest of their songs up against anyone else’s top 100 and the Beatles will have a better list! and that isn’t even counting how awesome they were on after they split. By far the greatest band EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[...] is quite simply an amazing cover of Blackbird by The Beatles. Sit back and listen to these sisters completely knock this one out of the park. Download link [...]
how the heck did a day in the life make number 1?!?!?!?! get back makes number 41?????????? get back is way better than a day in the life, i’m 12 and have enough common sense to know that!!!! rolling stone is all a bunch of 65 year old hippies that think they know everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!say rolling stone sucks if you agree.
Hey Kid, listen carefully to A Day In The Life… I agree that Get Back should be on the Top ten… But A Day In The Life is one of the best songs ever made, if you listen to the music, the lyrics, the melody, it’s just perfect OK…
hey im 11 i think both day in te life and get back should be in the top ten. why is i want to hold you hand 2nd and across the universe 80 sumthin?
“A Day In The Life” is about as close to perfect as I’ve ever heard. From the lyrics to the structure to the epic chord at the end, I would barely listen to anything else. Sure, “Get Back” is fun to listen to, but that’s not what music is about, and that’s not what makes a song great. Maybe as you grow older, you’ll learn to further analyze and appreciate music.
As for Rolling Stone being full of old hippies, I’d usually agree with you, but this list is great, especially when compared to some of there others.
haha burn. Not seeing any “rolling stone sucks.” ‘A Day In The Life’ ftw
A day in the life is much better than Get back, Lennon’ voice comes from heaven. You’re 12 and you listen to The Beatles, so cool. But your taste in music isn’t complete. I used to listen to Backstreet Boys when I was 12. Now i can’t stand it.
Beatles favorites by Paul not included…
Michele from Rubber Soul and their only song to win the Grammy for Song of the Year . Two Beatles party favorites Birthday and Ob la Di Ob la Da both from White Album not included and album Title Track Magical Mystery Tour all 3 Paul songs were all omitted ! Yet the # 33 song according to Rolling Stone …is The Walrus which reached # 56 on the Charts while the title Track … Magical Mystery Tour …is completely omitted. More huge Paul omissions … Getting Better and When I’m 64 both from Sgt Peppers and
both by Paul. ( Their only album to win Grammy Album of the Year and it only had 6 entries while other albums had as many as 13 entries ??? ) Dozens of obscure and non album tracks by John that are little known songs are part of the Beatles Top 100 Songs of all Time ??? How come the Beatles song with the longest reign
at #1( Hey Jude/9 weeks ) which of course is a Paul song and was also the highest entry for a Beatles song on the Rolling Stone Mag Top 500 Songs of All Time at # 8 yet is then only listed at # 7 on the Top 100 Beatles list ? How come B-Side Lennon songs are listed higher than # 1 hits written and sung by Paul bc the panelist on this magazine are really high on something and think by picking obscure , unknown tracks that they are thus making better choices . What about what the fans like and not these lame reviewers . Seriously…Strawberry Fields Forever is listed as the #3 Beatles song of ALL TIME (???) while over 20 of their tracks reached # 1 and this wasn’t even a Top 5 track ! What about Twist & Shout ? Another Paul track left off is Fool on the Hill .
I agree with Anthony – Most of the list makes no sense to me, leaving waaay too many Paul songs off or in low order…
Don’t you get it? John’s songs were better than Paul’s. I love Paul but you can’t just compare where their songs fell on the pop charts. If you know music you would understand that A Day in the Life (I like it with the Sgt. Pepper reprise) and Strawberry Feilds Forever are two of the greatest songs ever written by anyone!
What does being number 1 have to do with a great song, John’s B sides are there because they are better songs then Paul’s pop hits.
John and Paul were absolute equals. By the way, A DAY in the Life was written by both. The song I am upset about is Eleanor Rigby, Like a day in a life…it is one of the greatest songs ever written and should be in the top 5. I really get upset over these John vrs Paul debates … especially from the side that favors John…they are over the top with their adulation for him. no true Beatle fan would show disdain for John or Paul.
Completely agree here. They are different, both have strengths and weaknesses but that’s what was cool about the beatles, the full group. If I fell is great example of both. A true fan loves them both. I only feel the need to sing paul’s praises when he is shunned in compared to Lennon.
yeah no one every thinks that anyone is ever better then another in a band or team lol
you cant have some of those songs beacuase they are covers…twist and shout was a cover and i belive getting better was too
but fool on the hill should be there
and i think paul was at least in the same level making songs with john if not better while he was with the beatles but after, it was all john
Don’t get to upset about it. It’s not that Paul’s songs are any better or worse than John’s; just that Rolling Stone has more Lennon fans than McCartney fans. I mean on their greatest vocalist of all time list, they have Lennon at #5 and McCartney at #11 when we all know that Paul sings just as well, if not better, as John.
(I’m actually listening to Fool on the Hill right now!)
Getting Better is a McCartney song not a cover. My favoirte Beatle is Paul, but I’d be the first to say that without each other these guys wouldn’t have come up with 90% of the music on this list. In My Life is a beautiful song but do you know who wrote the melody? Paul. Hey Jude was almost entirely Pauls song but he wanted to change a line to something stupid and John told him to leave the line he had cause it was the best line in the song. A Day in The Life was written together…probably a little more John then Paul, but the bottom line is The Beatles wouldn’t have been the Beatles without John, and The Beatles wouldn’t have been The Beatles without Paul..end of story
P.S. Why the hell is Nowhere Man Mother Natures Son, and Blackbird so low?
Also where are The Fool on The Hill, and I Will….Octopus’ Garden!!!? Give Paul more credit…..
^^^ Also i know Octopus’ garden is Ringo’s
Here Comes the Sun is way too low at 28.
yeah, it should be on top ten. It always makes me feel better. Perfect melody!!
Its Very Repetetive, While A Good Song, Not As Breath Taking Honestly, While A Spectacular Harrison Track, There’s Just Better Beatles Songs Out There.
The list is perfectly fine to me, I mean, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I’m pretty sure a lot of people agree with the songs named. Pretty much everyone of their songs was amazing, its just really hard to put all of them on a list.
Was mostly pleased with yonder list. I thought that there might have been a few too many early songs that could have been replaced by some of their later more complex stuff. “Martha My Dear” probably could have made it up there. “What You’re Doing” would have been good. “Baby’s in Black” and “It’s All Too Much” (espesh because its soooo underrated and few people know how good it is). But the thing that made me smile was that “She said, She Said made it up there. I definitely agree with “A Day in the Life” being number one. Every band has its top artistic achievement. For Led Zep it was “Stairway to Heaven”, for Queen it was “Bohemian Rhapsody”, for the Beach Boys it was “Good Vibrations”, for the Eagles it was “Hotel California” and for the Beatles it is definitely “A Day In the Life”.
i like the top 10 songs but later in the list they include a lot of songs that could be better replaced by more popular songs. i think they’re just trying to seem like they have a better opinion than the billboard.
i don’t know if they counted covers but twist and shout is definately one of their best songs and michelle is one of the most covered songs of all time and it didn’t make the list.
i wish they wouldn’tve put abbey road medley as one song id like to know how you never give me your money would do by itself.
an alright list overall though the beatles only made a few bad songs, most of which were jokes or something (revolution 9, wild honey pie)
where is lady madonna?
Good Question!
Lady Madonna is at 86.
86?!?!?! That’s Ridiculously Low!
[...] Posted by hitmanrva1 btw anyone checked out rolling stones's 100 best beatles songs? Rolling Stone picks their top 100 Beatles songs of all time | Mediocre Music Blog can't argue with their #1 pick Pretty strange that Across the Universe is ranked so low (84). [...]
what i think helter skelter should be higher it basically started metal it was the first metal song ever. Also no Rocky Raccoon? That song is great. And THANK GOD! revolution 9 isn’t on their however revolution 1 is good. Also the long and winding road at 90 that’s another great one. I don’t think wild honey pie should be on it but i actually like it its kinda funny, but give it credit literally McCartney just said “can’t i just record something and put it on the album?”
Rolling Stone never satisfies anyone with their lists, but the top 10 is pretty close to what Id pick. We all have our personal favorites, but those 10 are the best pop staples, music milestones, and legendary anthems of the last 100 years. The Medley should be higher, I think, and I agree that this is very in favor of Lennon, not McCartney; I mean, even John said he would have killed to write When Im 64…Fixing a Hole, Michelle, Rocky Raccoon should all be up there.
Twist and Shout?
I think they are only putting up songs written by them, but I may be wrong. I completely agree btw, Twist and Shout, amazing love it!
I would do it a little bit different:
1. A Day in the Life (certainly!)
2. Abbey Road’s Medley
3. Strawberry Fields Forever
4. Yesterday
5. In My Life
6. Hey Jude!
7. While My Guitar Genty Weeps
8. Let it Be
9. Come Together
10. Eleanor Rigby
11. Something
12. A Hard Day’s Night
13. Norwegian Wood
14. Revolution
15. I Saw Her Standing There
16. Tomorrow Never Knows
17. Get Back
18. Ticket to Ride
19. Help!
20. I Wanna Hold Your Hand
I really think mine is better! =)
I agree with your top 3
4. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
5. For No One
6. Norwegian Wood
7. In My Life
8. I’ve Just Seen a Face
9. And You’re Bird Can Sing
10. Lovely Rita
11. Cry Baby Cry
12. Happiness is a Warm Gun
That’s about as far as I can go without like triple guessing myself. I always preferred Paul, but they are both on the same caliber of song writting/ artistic ability, just completely different musically. But yeah that’s just me, and I’m weird.
HAPPINESS IS A WARM GUN (BANG BANG SHOOT SHOOT)
Mother Superior Jumped The Gun!
I need a fix cause I’m going down
down to the bits which I left up-town
The Abbey Road Medley definitely needs to be in the top five. What is the deal with Norwegian Wood ? #13 ? Please !
1. Day in the Life: Can’t really argue with this one.
2. I Want to Hold Your Hand: First great song they made.
3. Hey Jude: Some one give Jude some love.
4. Paperback Writer: Genius guitar/bass work.
5. Elanor Rigby: Biggest snub on the list
6. Something: George’s best.
7. Penny Lane: Love the tune, another big snub.
8. Lovely Rita: Sexy meter maids are just great.
9. Day Tripper: Great vocals, one of the all time best Guitar hooks
10. With a Little Help from my Friends: Great lyrics, different feel than Cocker’s version
11. Let it be: Most popular song of all time?
12. Revolution: Worked on a bunch of levels
13. Lady Madonna: Leaving this song off the list is a sham.
14. Here comes the Sun: Sweet song
15. Hard Days Night: Another great early tune
Picking your favorite Beatles songs is like picking your favorite colors; you can’t make a bad choice
Except for Revolution 9
where is all u need is love? cuz i cant find it…
Tom Edit: it’s #21
Twist and Shout didn’t make it!!!
Too much John and not enough Paul. The Long and Winding Road should SOOO have been higher than 90 (I’d say 1, but some people unlike me hate the overdubs) and there should be hardly any early Beatles there.
I absolutely agreed with you on The Long And Winding Road.Itshould absolutely been in the top 10
I agree as well. Ob-la-di Ob-lal-da and Rocky Raccoon completely deserve to be listed. and also…THE FOOL ON The HILL!!!?!?!
A decent list. I mean, it has most of the really good ones in there somewhere. My biggest complaints:
1. Across The Universe is 84… that is ridiculous
2. Abbey Road Medley, I’ve Just Seen A Face, Tomorrow Never Knows, Got To Get You Into My Life, Helter Skelter, Baby You’re A Rich Man, and Lady Madonna all should have been higher.
I agree.
I’m not that sure about the medley, but I’ve Just Seen A Face is definitely the most romantic song ever written
Michelle
Where is octopus’s Garden? And Lovely Rita?I would put all the songs from rubber soul to abbey road on the list, but since we have to pick =/
I would put all the songs from SPLHCB
Across The Universe – 84?!
That is the biggest problem on the list.
A Day In The Life – yep, no.1
and The Abbey road Medley, yep, it’s amazing but-
there’s a bit too much rubbish on it so I’d put it about 39-40.
Sorry, I mean- mean mr mustard, as a single song, not top 100 but Golden Slumbers – top 30 on its own.
I think the medley is good, but it’s good just because it’s made up by great songs that should be considered on their own, not as part of a medley
beatles songs are realy fabulous. i!m one of the beatle fanatic
beatled r stupid!
You are stupid
Oh no. Without Beatles, there will be no rock bands. Cause they’re God of rock
)
I am a beatle fan since they made it in America in 1964. That means I’m old. The list is simply that, a list, we can all agree or disagree. There are songs not on the list that could be in someones top 10. Songs they didn’t write, like Twist and Shout, are not and should not be on the list. While “A day in the life” is not my personal favorite, I and everyone at the time recognized it as a masterpiece. When Sgt. Peper came out, it was like the world stopped. That song was the culmination of the most influential album ever made, even if not my personal favorite beatle album.
What they should do is eliminate the 50 worst songs, a tough list to make, and then have the rest of the songs tied at number 1.
Here, there and everywhere should be at least in the top 5, A day in the life is totally their Bohemian Rhapsody.
Here there and everywhere, my wedding song. And each person in the bridal party marched down to a different beatle song, music only.
No, bohemian rhapsody is totally queen’s A Day In The Life
hi um no offense but i think julia is a beautiful song and deserved at least number 30
Norwegian Wood is the greatest Beatles song.
hi um i thought that julia should have been in atleast the thirties that song is beautiful and more people need to recognize that!
Rocky Raccoon needs to be in the top 25
A Day in The Life is a great song top 10 maybe but not #1, im not sure what would be the top 10 very hard to say. but a couple of songs are WAY to low and shouldve been in the top 20: Hey Bulldog, Something, Helter Skelter, Dig a Pony, Across the Universe, and Dear Prudence
You have to see how Rolling Stone judges the quality of a song. A Day in the Life and Strawberry Fields are their two best songs hands down. As far as which one is better is based on opinion, and the only reason RS put DITL as Number 1 is because of the huge orchestra they used to combine the two segments. They both integrate the use of guitars, cellos, violins, drums, pianos, etc, (even some instruments I’ve never heard of before) to absolute perfection. Not to mention incredible lyrics on both songs. Listen to the lyrics, then play it over and listen to the amazing sounds they accomplished(either play them loud, or listen to them in a car with good speakers). I actually think Strawberry Fields is better. That is how RS determines the quality of a song. They are both John songs lyrically. Paul had the middle of A Day in the Life and helped out a slight bit on John’s part. John was definitely a better lyricists. HOWEVER, Paul was the one who really was fascinated by the tune(i guess you can say) in the song. Sgt. Peppers was his idea and he played a huge role in combing the sounds and utilizing all sorts of sounds ( brass, strings, percussion). He was influenced by the Pet Sounds album from the Beach Boys.(Which does the same thing, but not as good, so to speak) That is why those ARE THEIR TWO BEST SONGS!
In my opinion, the only reason Hold Your Hand is on there is because it was their first good song(still doesn’t compare to others), but also because it sparked Beatlemania and made the world and U.S. recognize them. It’s a catchy song but c’mon, NUMBER 2?
I agree with the rest of the top 10 but i would switch Yesterday and Hey Jude. Hey Jude is Paul’s best song. John said so and I have to agree. Awesome lyrics and it has everything a good song has. Yesterday is just like For No One and Blackbird. I love them all but they are all missing something. They aren’t complete. It’s just Paul by himself singing, with little help from THE BAND.
I believe John was the “better” Beatle. I’m more of a lyrics guy, and John is just incredible. Paul had good stuff but in my opinion, none of his songs come close to Strawberry Fields.
Well there you have it. Let me know what you guys think
I agree, but personally I think ADITL is better, it shows the greatness of The Beatles as a band, while SFF is “just another Lennon song”, that can be easily compared to Imagine or Jealous Guy. My favourite is definitely John, but as a band, their greatest song and masterpiece will always be A Day In The Life
How can people say I want to hold your hand is their first best song. I saw her standing there is much better.
Funny, about 7 years ago, Rolling Stone published a list of the 500 greatest songs by any artist of all time. In their list, the Beatles songs went in this order:
1. Hey Jude
2. Yesterday
3. I Want to Hold Your Hand
4. Let It Be
5. In My Life
6. A Day in the Life
7. Help
8. She Loves You
9. Strawberry Fields Forever
10. Norwegian Wood
11. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
12. I Saw Her Standing There
13. A Hard Day’s Night
14. Please Please Me
15. Something
16. With a Little Help from My Friends
17. Ticket to Ride
18. Penny Lane
19. Rain
Funny how opinions change in 7 years (and probably new/different writers and editors).
I agreed with you. They should at least put the top 19 in the same order as in the 500 greatest song of all time.why does rain fell to 88???
I both agree and disagree with the list. I don’t think there is a bad Beatle song, even the covers.
The first LP I ever bought was Rubber Soul and it remains my favorite album ever. I was 13. There are some glaring omissions; for example Michelle should have made the top 100, but every song in the top ten is without dispute a masterpiece.
If you get a chance you should read Geoff Emerick’s book about his days as an engineer working on the Beatles albums. You will learn that the real genius behind the Beatles was Paul. His ideas helped shape the direction they continued to take and was the most influential in the recording studio. But it is impossible to discount the chemistry they had together. Without John and his brilliant vocals and wordplay, George’s innovative guitar, Ringo monumentally underrated percussion and Paul peerless sense of melody the Beatles would not have happened and the world of popular music would have missed it’s greatest piece of history. If you think I’m about the make “the” statement, you are right. The Beatles were and are THE greatest band in the history of popular music. NO ONE IS EVEN CLOSE.
1. Strawberry Fields Forever
2. A Day In The Life
3. Something
4. Yesterday
5. In My Life
6. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
7. Hey Jude
8. Let It Be
9. I Am the Walrus
10. Come Together
11. No Reply
12. Ticket To Ride
13. Across The Universe
14. We Can Work It Out
15. Don’t Let Me Down
16. Eleanor Rigby
17. Norwegian Wood
18. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
19. Tomorrow Never Knows
20. Help
21. The rest
HOW ABOUT REAL LOVE???? NOBODY LIKES IT???????
A Day in the Life is a masterpiece, showing Paul and Johns sick ass vocals. But honestly, Hello, Goodbye number 100? God damn, these guys are high… I’m gonna go ahead and make my own list, I probably have more Beatles on my iPod then the Rolling Stones could ever dream of having. Haha
Listing the top 100 beatles songs is tough, but RS did a pretty good job. “No reply” & “Oh! Darling” should have been higher…I’m sad that “Rocky Racoon”, “Lovely Rita” & “This Boy” didn’t make the cut.
also I would have included “Babys in Black” & “Your Mother Should Know”
36t3t
Yesterday is a masterpiece,my favourite song of all time.So as In My Life.I personally though that Yesterday should be in first place.
“It’s All Too Much” should be on the list
“Your Mother Should Know” should be on the list
“I Want To Tell You” should also be on the list
where is twist and shout?
It’s probably not on there because it wasn’t written by them
If I fell is at too high position. It isn’t so good as Here comes the sun, Across the universe, Penny Lane, I’m the walrus,…
Funny, their Greatest Albums of All Time list stated that number 1 was Sgt Pepper, yet they have hardly any SPLHCB songs in this list – I think there is more Revolver!
Songs that Should’ve Been on the List (in no particular order):
1. Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite
2. Birthday
3. You Never Give Me Your Money
4. The Fool on the Hill
5. Piggies
6. GLASS ONION, come on!!!!
7. I Need You
