Rolling Stone magazine recently unleashed a special collector’s edition detailing what they consider to be the Beatles’ 100 finest tracks, in order. The magazine (on sale here) features the list of the fab four’s greatest songs, as well as quotes from the band on each track and an introduction by Elvis Costello. Looking over the list really drives home just how deep their catalog is, any band that can claim to have 59 songs better than “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” surely did something right. The definition of the word “sin” is to pick one hundred Beatles songs and rank them.
its only love – GREAT SONG- WERE IS IT
a day in the life
something
strawberryfields forever
because
in my life
getting better
come together
It’s such a subjective thing to list 100 best songs by a band where the majority of their songs are amazing. I love McCartney’s ballads. Top for me are: The Long and Winding road, She’s leaving Home, Fool on the hill, Goodnight, all Macca’s ballads off Revolver, so so many.
How dare you rolling stone. What blaspheming sob came up with the idea of ranking the Beatles? And how dare they use the term ‘Best’ which should have been replaced with ‘favorite’ implying a matter of opinion.
You can always spot a true music fan when you ask them for their favorite band- the first thing out of their mouths is always “Not counting the Beatles?” Because they know it should simply be assumed that The Beatles are their favorite band.
My top 20 favorite Beatles songs look like this:
1. Let it Be
2. In My Life
3. Yesterday
4. The Long and Winding Road
5. Think for Yourself
6. I’m Happy Just to Dance With You
7. Wait
8. Across the Universe
9. Act Naturally
10. Penny Lane
11. All You Need is Love
12. A Day in the Life
13. Yellow Submarine
14. Julia
15. I Will
16. Blackbird
17. The Night Before
18. I Need You
19. You’re Going To Lose That Girl
20. Girl
I don’t really think so, cause the only renmaiing Beatles members are Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney.. and in the first Beatles Rock Band I think they squeezed all their songs in(:
Revolution is #13 . . .
here is my list of favorite beatle song, or perhaps the best best beatle song
1. Golden Slumber/Carry that Weight
2. The Long and Winding Road
3. Let it Be
4. Hey Jude
5. Yesterday
6. Penny Lane
7. I Saw Her Standing There
8. Here There and Everywhere
9. Here Comes the Sun
10. Eleanor Rigby
Where the hell is OLD BROWN SHOE?!?!
agree, where is it?
and i think BLUE JAY WAY should be added on the list too.
RAIN is at 88? What’s wrong with you people?
Biggest surprise to not make the list is definitely “Michelle”, followed by “Fool on the Hill”. I could name about 20 other songs which I would have liked on this list, but those two are the biggest surprises to me.
I’m shocked “You’re Going to Lose That Girl” was so high on the list. If you look at the songs that are as high on the list, it doesn’t fit in. I have nothing against it, it has some of John’s best vocals and is certainly worthy of the top 100, but it should be a lot lower.
This list is pretty much an extended “Greatest Hits” of the Beatles, and that’s really not the sort of treatment their catalog deserves. This list would best serve a music noob looking to find a few new Beatles songs they haven’t heard yet. For the people who know the entire Beatles discography like the back of their hand, this list is pointless. Every Beatles fan is going to look at this list and call out the songs that are too high or too low. And in the end… SO WHAT.
I don’t want to bash this list completely. The top 10 is acceptable. But then again, you could rearrange #2 through #25 and place them in a new random order and it would appear just as acceptable. The Beatles were that good.
In the end, it’s just a bit of fun. We all know what our personal favorite Beatles songs are and why that is. No one needs a magazine to tell us which Beatles songs are “better” than others, because it’s subjective either way.
Where is “Revolution”? That is a top 20, much less top 100.
And where is This Boy? But seriously. One of the best vocals by Lennon and also a great composition.
Seems pretty good to me…. Except for the omission of “When I’m Sixty-Four”. Sorta splitting hairs to determine which ones are higher on the list.
Where is a little help from my friends on this list ?
no.61
I saw an interview about this list. They considered the IMPORTANCE of the song, to the Beatles’ development, as well as that of music in general. This was no mere favorites liist. Even with that in mind, though, I have some serious issues with choice and placement. Just happy to see “…gently weeps” getting some recognition. It’s often omitted.
“The Beatles are God; everybody else is just a band.” — me.
I’ll just be the one to say that I think this is a very good list. I mean, yes, everyone’s going to have their little nit-pickings about some songs being too high or low, but think about it: Is there an order of 100 songs – besides your own – that is NOT going to irk you in some way? Having one of your favorites missing does not make this a shit list.
My own nit-pickings:
#2 I want to hold you hand – The only way this belongs this high is that they took “importance” into account, in which case it may be THE most important, starting the British Invasion. Other than that, they wrote several far more creative, deep compositions.
Actually that’s about it. I mean, I could be pissed off that Rain and Within You Without You are too low or You’re Gonna Lose That Girl is too high, but why bother? The songs toward the very top are quite arguably their most creative and influential, while everything else is still very good.
The lists best placement is its #1 choice. No Beatles release was as inventive, experimental, creative, or influential all in one song as A Day in the Life. Nothing they did even begins to approach it.
i agree, i think WHITIN YOU WHITOUT YOU and RAIN should be, at least on the top 50.
they are all great songs…how can you rank them?
why isnt shes leaving home on here?? atleast in top 20. and hello/goodbye on 100. this is a trip.
#82 buddy
